historic Frederick.  Before leaving home, ensure you have plenty of quarters because parking is
not free!

For those new to the area, I’m sure you have heard of the underground railroad going through
our county, or about Frederick’s First Black Doctor and even one of our historical Methodist
churches downtown being a hospital before its transformation.  For the Fredericktonians, you
remember the stories of attending Lincoln, not being allowed to enter the now Boys and Girls
Club over on Burck Street across from McCurdy Field, and the restaurants downtown that would
not let you eat inside.  Would it not be nice to take your family to Frederick’s
First and Only Black History Museum where all of this plus more is documented?  To call your
family in DC or down south and say, we made a great move!  The kids are learning so much
about our ancestry, who knew living in Frederick would change our lives forever?

Guess what?! We will have to settle for stories told by our grandparents because no such
museum exists in Frederick!  If you are like me and a “transplant” citizen, let’s hope someone
takes you under their wings to educate you about the richness of our people here.  Yes, I heard
your sigh and maybe there was a cry, but do not lose the faith!  There is an organization here,
rallying for a museum that we can call our own, and a museum where we can display our
artwork, historic papers, portraits, oral histories and even African artifacts.  The African-American
Resources-Cultural and Heritage, also known as AARCH, has been working diligently to
increase the support from us and other organizations across the state.

AARCH is committed to amplify the “multi-cultural learning opportunities in our museums and
schools, and there is an increasing demand for an African-American heritage tourism product in
Frederick County.”  Now that you have this information, what are you going to do?  Make it a
family affair and attend one of their meetings.  Perhaps volunteer some of your time with
researching additional grants to help fund this project.

For those willing to travel, there are two inspirational museums located in Baltimore, MD
approximately forty-five miles outside of Frederick.  You have The National Great Blacks in Wax
Museum (www.ngbiwm.com) and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African-American
History and Culture (www.africanamericanculture.org).  Both establishments serve the purpose
of educating and empowering our people.

I am grateful for the lessons received from my public school education, but it’s so enriching to
learn about the lives of African-Americans that have not yet graced our textbooks.  So much of
what I know was taught at home and throughout my attendance at a Historical Black
College/University (HBCU).

Our time is coming soon!  Want to stay informed?  Join various organizations in Frederick City
and throughout the county which share your interests.  In addition, make www.blackfrederick.
com your homepage.
