This is the first in a series of 3 articles about Eliminating Achievement Gaps (EAG).
EAG is an advocacy group for African American students in Frederick County Public
Schools. EAG meetings provide an ongoing public forum for open discussions and
development of actions to support the acceleration of African American student
achievement in Frederick County Public Schools.
EAG meetings are held the 3rd Saturday in every month (except December and July).
Meetings are held at Lincoln Elementary School A Building, 200 Madison Street Frederick
Maryland, 21701, from 10:00 a.m. until noon.
EAG was organized in 2003, in response to the then, pending linking of passage of high
school assessments and receipt of a Maryland high school diploma. Founding board members
and community activists met in August 2003 to develop strategies to disseminate the
information in the African American community. The group set out call to action for the
African American community, for the state of emergency looming centering on high school
assessments.
The mission of EAG is to promote the elimination of achievement gaps by promoting actions
that accelerate African American students’ academic achievement. The vision of the
organization is to inform, support, and empower the African American community, while
engaging in a collaborative partnership with Frederick County Public Schools in the work
to eliminate achievement gaps between African American students and all students.
Eliminating Achievement Gaps is committed to partnering with other community members to
promote positive interactions built on developing an appreciation for the strengths
African American students bring to the learning situation. EAG members are committed to
being involved in outreach and education with the goal of facilitating individual and
group empowerment.
The next article will focus on the meeting structure, topics discussed, current
initiatives, and why you need to become involved.
