A few days ago, I read an article by MSN Personal Finance Columnist, Jim Jubak entitled, “Why oil could hit $180
a barrel”, which cited a few crucial geopolitical and financial realities that supported his claim.
As a matter of professional courtesy, I’m not going to quote Mr. Jubak directly, but I will break it down to terms that
we all can understand.
As you know, due to a series of events, we are now in the midst of America ’s second quarter economic recession.
The stock market is consistently experiencing losses, tens of thousands of our workers have been laid-off, and
thousands are losing their homes to foreclosure and to top it all off, gas prices are increasing at an
unprecedented rate.
Presently about $3.60/gallon here in Frederick and expected to climb to $4.00/gallon by the start of the summer
holiday and vacation season.
But wait. If you think that is expensive, according to Mr. Jubak, if crude oil climbs to $180.00 a barrel, we will soon
be paying $5.50/gallon!
And that is just “the tip of the iceberg.”
Due to our dependence on fossil fuels for transportation, manufacturing, framing, generation of electricity and a
host of other uses, it looks like we are going to have to “tighten our belts” in order to make ends meet.
For most of us, our salaries, pensions, annuities and other sources of incomes will remain relatively flat, but just
about everything that we buy is going to cost a lot more.
Although I can offer a few suggestions to get the most for your money (using coupons, buying in bulk, joining
shoppers discount clubs, etc.), I believe that this could be the perfect opportunity to pool our resources and share
information via this excellent resource, the BlackFrederick.com web site.

As it is often said, “When all that you have are lemons you can always make lemonade”.
