Inspiration comes from the most unlikely places.
Last month as I met with several of our community leaders, I was repeatedly reminded of how
as a people, we generally fail to work together.
Although we have many active local financial, educational, recreational, civic and social
organizations, many are unknown or underutilized because we tend to work independently
unless there is a crisis or a compelling event.
Recently, during a Michael Baisden radio interview, George C. Fraser, Chairman & CEO,
Frasernet, Inc. (http://www.frasernet.com/), and author of the book entitled, “CLICK”, stated that
networking should be about creating the “win-win”.
Mr. Fraser said, “It’s about “clicking” and its about you winning, me winning and GOD winning –
creating the “W3”, win… win… win…. and most of us are not out here networking to click, we’re
out here networking to “get something”, not out here networking to give, and we’re violating the
fundamental principles of networking, and that way we’re never going to be successful at it.”
“We should stop networking to get and network to give. Network to click and add value, create
relationships with people and stop getting somebody’s business card, and call them up on
Monday saying, could you get me a job… get me a contract for a piece of business that I’m trying
to close, etc.”
“That’s not networking – that’s begging, and most of us are begging and we have to fix that and
click and really continue the conversation that “success runs in our race”, because most people
cringe when they hear the term “networking”, because it sounds like trading favors with
strangers, and we have to fix that.
Bottom line – We are not as effective as we could be if we would only “let our guard down” and
trust each other enough to form constructive and effective relationships.
George Fraser concluded his remarks by saying, “the essence of networking is serving others”.
